What is editorial strategy? And why do I need it?

You’ve drafted a content strategy deck. It’s new. It’s shiny. It’s full of big, ambitious plans. One of those big plans is a series of thought-provoking articles, Q&As, and how-to blog posts.

The deck includes SEO keywords and KPIs, plus four big content pillars to get you going. Your strategy is solid, except that you don’t actually know what you’re going to write about. A content pillar and a keyword on their own don’t offer a clear angle for a piece of written content.

What specific topics will you cover? Who are you going to interview? What’s the timeliness of each piece? What big industry challenge are you tackling? What kind of discussion are you trying to lead? What’s happening in the news that you can tie into your content?

How will all the topics fit together over the course of a year?

Enter: editorial planning

We take your content strategy and get to work planning the topics and angles of your pieces.

We’ll help you build out a plan that outlines:

  1. Who to interview
  2. What news hooks to use
  3. What research and statistics to pull in
  4. Why the topic relates to your product, service, or mission
  5. How to tie it all together
  6. How to adapt the initial piece of content for social media channels and email blasts

You’ll leave with a detailed plan and writer’s briefs to produce articles over three, six or even 12 months. Pass that plan and those briefs to your in-house content creator or a freelancer writer, or hire us to do the next stage of writing.
